1st FURLONG RESTORATION

Work begins

Lancaster Canal  commenced work at Easter, 2018, on the relining of the ‘First Furlong’.  This is the dry length of the canal between bridge 172 at Stainton Crossing and bridge 173 at Sellet Hall.  A waterproof membrane, protected by a geotextile layer on either side will be further protected by concrete blocks.  The blocks are being laid by hand by volunteers.

Lancaster Canal Restoration Report 2019

Lancaster Canal Trust volunteers have had regular work parties throughout the year. These work parties are held on the second weekend of each month and volunteers are always welcome.

The weather has not always been kind and getting the water out of the First Furlong so that lining and block laying can take place has been a bit of a problems with pumps working hard to get the water out, a bit ironic as we really want the water in.

The First Furlong will be lined with blocks which will prevent the lining being damaged and the last block will be laid any time soon.

At the latest work party just before Christmas the weather was again unkind with snow and sleet and heavy mid-week rain before the work party which affected a clay filling task, but nevertheless the volunteers laid the final blocks to bridge 172; now there are just a few more needed to fill in and seal along the gabion wall.

The Lancaster Canal Trust has raised money for the blocks with a very successful “Block Appeal,” so far they have raised almost £13,000 towards the cost of the blocks but it is not too late to “buy a block” and details of how to do this are on the Lancaster Canal Trust website www.lctrust.co.uk

The lining is almost complete and the next stage will be to perform stillage/leakage tests to make sure that Canal and River Trust are satisfied that any leakage is within acceptable limits. The First Furlong will be the least leaky part of the Lancaster which is built on limestone and is notorious for leaking.

Stop planks will be needed and their design has been approved by Canal and River Trust and they are being ordered.
