The Old Black and White-A song by Colin Lavelle.

I used to live on the canal about 10 years ago and wrote this song about 'the old black and white'. Just finished recording it for the fun of it'!

Am                                                                                    G                                                                 Am

Coal from the South, limestone from the north, each cargo charged according to its worth

Am                                                                      G                                                                     Am

By horse and barge each cargo shall, be carried by permission of the Lancaster Canal,

          C    G              Am               C    G              Am

The old black and white, the old black and white.

Am                                                                    G                                                           Am

Raise the paddle gear, use your might, lock after lock down the Glasson flight,

Am                                                                                G                                                         Am

Smelt the salt air, Glasson Dock is near, that’s 600 thousand tons by barge this year.

  C    G                              Am      C    G                                Am

600 thousand tons his year, 600 thousand tons this year.

Dm                                                                      C                                   Dm

Steam locomotives and iron tracks, the facts speak for themselves,

Dm                                                                                         C                                  Dm

Cheaper and faster now rail will be master and its hard times on the canals,

C                                  Dm

Hard times on the canals

INSTRUMENTAL VERSE

Clear the banks heed what I say, that’s the Water Witch coming and she’s got right of way,

Horses at the gallop, waves at the bow, Kendal to Preston at 9 miles an hour,

Make way for the Water Witch, make way for the Water Witch.

Steam locomotives and iron tracks, the facts speak for themselves,

Cheaper and faster now rail is the master and its hard times on the canals,

Hard times on the canals.

But now the railway has gone and the track is removed,

And the old black and white, her worth has proved,

Driven by diesel bright narrow boats now, sail by permission of the Lancaster Canal,

The old black and white, the old black and white,
